Amháin & EMPHI delivers a contemplative two-track EP…
Originally from Dublin but now firmly ensconced in his adopted Australian home, Alan Thomas Doyle has carved a growing reputation with his Amháin moniker. Here he joins forces with Swedish producer EMPHI for a classy outing of proper progressive which doubles as both their Balance Music debut.
Amháin is recognized for his deep, melodic, and progressive sound that’s seen him grace stages at global festivals like Burning Man, Lightning in a Bottle, and Rainbow Serpent, as well as club gigs at Berlin’s Sisyphos and LA’s Pattern Bar. With recent releases on Vapour and Meanwhile Recordings, and a notable remix of Erdi Irmak‘s “Walls” for Proton Music, the production career of Amháin is gaining momentum.
EMPHI, known as Johan, hails from Stockholm, Sweden. He made his debut 4 years ago on Yotto’s Odd One Out imprint. Since entering the progressive house arena, he’s made a mark with his signature melodic approach to percussion-filled anthems. Releasing on well respected labels with progressive world stars such as Hernan Cattaneo, John Cosani, Ezequiel Arias and Cid Inc, his productions are increasingly receiving support from all the right players.
A fresh morning glow imbues ‘Hallen’. The percussion is crisp, sizzling with vibrant urgency, complemented by a gentle bottom end. Above it all, hoisted high in the sky, hangs a mist, a clearing fog filled with reverb carrying wonderful sounds. From deep within that mist, the rising tone of an expectant synth materialises. It promotes unity and joy, offering warm comfort after a long night.
With ‘Hekla,’ we progress towards the moment the sun sets. The minor keys create a more mysterious force, suggesting deeper introspection. The drums are sturdier yet inviting, made more hypnotic by the rhythmic shift of the bass throb. A syncopated wood block vibrates, serving as a starting point for classic synth sounds to emerge. During the breakdown, a vocal sample is introduced, offering prudent, reflective advice. The night is looking good.
