There isn’t much music on the musical spectrum which Englishman Chris Barratt aka Eagles & Butterflies doesn’t draw inspiration from, and it shows in his productions which can range from downtempo to techno. This diversity has lead to the Englishman releasing on some of the world’s most celebrated labels including Get Physical, Innervisions, Noir Music and Southern Fried. Earlier this year he also signed a couple of productions to Bedrock records which included his re-work of DK8’s classic techno banger ‘Murder was the Bass’. There is no doubt that Eagles & Butterflies are starting to confirm that he is an artist with some serious longevity, and his Balance Selections podcast is one that will sit with the listener for while, emotive without ever being too obvious. What music did you listen too as a child?
I was a massive fan of all things 80s, Guns N Roses were my favorite, but loved all things from Michael Jackson, Metallica, ELO to Tracey Chapman. My first electronic stuff though was Daft Punk and the whole Ed Banger vibe, anything on Roule, all the French stuff back then was insane.
When was the first time that you realized that you liked electronic music?
Daft Punk for sure, I remember watching the videos on MTV and seeing them live for the fist time and after that pretty much became obsessed!
When was the first time you saw a DJ in a club?
I used to go to illegal raves on the South Coast of England near where I lived at a young age, i just remember the music being super fast and the energy and vibe was amazing, everyone there for the love of the music. Without doubt a ket part of where i am today was from this age, i then went on to promoting parties, DJing and making music from there.
Which producers/artists/acts inspire you?
There are a lot of producers i really love from the likes Ame, David August, SJ Koze, John Talabot and Roman Flugel, to Timberland, Quincy Jones to RY X, so many great producers / artists and each with a different vibe. I also really love Lana Del Reys music, she is my favorite artist of the last decade, i love the warm, texture and sound of every record she puts out, something about her vibe that really gets me.
What was the last album that you downloaded/bought?
The last album was RY X’s new album, one of my favorite musicians and a super super talented guy that sound completely unique in everything he does, amazing music. Best album i have listened to in a long time.
What is your current production and DJ set up like?
Studio set up i use Logic X and mainly use the Moog Sub37 and Minibrute, the Phonon SM B-02 Headphones are my secret weapon for making music on the road. Live i just use CDJs, no frills just good music!
What releases do you have on the horizon?
I’ve just remixed a new one from RY X, Mojave just dropped on Luca Bachettis label and my remix for Underworld comes out this week…. Lots more this year including my new label Art Imitating Life, and 2 release on 2 of my favorite labels, but you will have to wait and see for those, both around Sept / Oct 🙂
Where can we hear you perform?
Lots of shows coming up over the summer, really excited to play my first show for Circo Loco @ DC10 in Ibiza, Awakenings and also my label launch party and Watergate in Berlin on Sept 2nd.
Tell us more about the podcast you made for Balance?
I actually did it on CDjs i wanted it have a live feel and less “perfect studio mixing”, it includes 2 unreleased new tracks from me, my RY X remix, my Underworld remix and my new on on Endless, plus new music from Innervisions, Afterlife and Keinmusic.
