Oliver Huntemann… Need we say more?
One of the true pioneers, you can trace his roots all the way back to the early 90’s as a early member of Humate, work your way through his many accomplishments and end up at today where he is still as relevant as ever. Not only has he added his expert touch to some of the globe’s biggest acts (from Underworld, to Chemical Brothers to Depeche Mode), but his label Ideal Audio has been releasing deadset quality since 2008 (and that includes his album H-3). The German is also extremely sough-after as a collaborator, and his co-productions with Dubfire in particular, resulted in some of that year’s biggest dancefloor bombs.
Of late, Huntemann is constantly releasing quality through his label Senso Sounds, which has grown exponentially in popularity. And as the legend tells us, there are plenty more to come: ‘The priority for this year is set on the release of my new album ‘Propaganda‘, coming out on Friday 13th of October. The singles ‘Poltergeist‘ and ‘Rotlicht‘ are already rotating very well and ’m very excited to have the whole story soon available for everyone. Beside this I have just signed great new singles to Senso Sounds from my buddy Hatzler, Brasilian DJ Alex Stein, German producer Carlo Ruetz and some cool tracks from various artists for the succesful Senso Sounds Level Series.’
Currently on tour in Australia, we count ourselves lucky that Oliver has found the time to craft a podcast which throbs and pulsates in all the right places. With tracks from Andre Winter, Tale of Us and of course, Oliver himself, this is the sound of a true techno craftsman.

What music did you listen too as a child?
As long as I can remember I was into electronic music. My parents were not that much into music but they received every month the ‚Club Top 14‘ Disco Sampler on vinyl with the latest 70s Disco stuff. I was unpatiently waiting for this and played that record countless times. My first ever bought 12“ single was Trans-X ‘Living On Video’ in 1982 and from there the story continued.
When was the first time that you realized that you liked electronic music?
Realizing that I’m into electronic music was more like a process than just a moment which turned the switch. I remember that me and my friends – we all must have been around ten years old – acting like we are in a band. One with a self made fake guitar (interesting side story: it was Mathias ‘Hatzler‘, who is still a close friend and also releases on my label Senso Sounds nowadays), me on the drums (using plastic buckets) and one guy on the microphone – because a band simply had to be like this. When I remembered this recently I was smiling because we were always performing ‘Das Model’ by Kraftwerk without knowing they already did full electronic music in a different way than usual bands. Means I was into it long time before I knew about it.
When was the first time you saw a DJ in a club?
I must have been 15 or 16 and Kurtis Blow was supposed to perform at Novo, the hottest club of the city. I don’t know why and how but I really made it into the club, even with hardcore bouncers at the door and me looking like a little boy. Anyway, the result counts and I was inside. I was just like wow wow wow with the neon colours, a flashy glass bottom dancefloor with lights like in Saturday Night Fever – just cooler. Coolness just broke in a second when the regular lights turned on and someone spoke into the microphone: “This is a razzia, please provide your IDs for control…“. To make a long story short, for some reason I also made it out of the club. Even I didn’t see Kurtis Blow that night I was deeply impressed from the club vibe and couldn’t resist to get more.
What was the last album that you downloaded/bought?
Ghospoet – Dark Days + Canpés
What is your current production and DJ set up like?
The studio set-up is based on Logic Audio plus a lot of plug ins and native synths like the Arturia and Native Instruments stuff and Focal Twin 6BE speakers. For djing I’m quiet basic with three CDJ 2000 MK 2 (linked) and either a Model 1 or Pioneer DJM 2000 mixer.
What releases do you have on the horizon?
The priority for this year is set on the release of my new album ‘Propaganda‘, coming out on Friday 13th of October. The singles ‘Poltergeist‘ and ‘Rotlicht‘ are already rotating very well and from now I’m very excited to have the whole story soon available for everyone. Beside this I have just signed great new singles to Senso Sounds from my buddy Hatzler, Brasilian DJ Alex Stein, German producer Carlo Ruetz and some cool tracks from various artists for the succesful Senso Sounds Level Series.
Where can we hear you perform?
I’m almost packing my suitcase for Australia where I head to (after a gig in Stuttgart on Sunday past). I’m going to Australia for three gigs at Brown Alley in Melbourne, Mr. Brown in Canberra and the fantastic Days Like This in Sydney along Kevin Saunderson, Slam and Christian Smith. After I go back to Europe for three weeks including Amsterdam Dance Event with a Senso day party in an outstanding venue, reachable only by boat. Last but not least my path guides me to Mexcio City where I’m based for four weeks to tour through Colombia, Argentina, Mexico, USA and Canada.
Tell us more about the podcast you made for Balance?
The balance mix is based on brand new stuff, some unreleased, of Senso plus a few tracks from other talented artists. It reflects my current vibe of underground dance music.
