Turkish producer Gadi Mitrani returns to Dawn till Dusk with a reflective cut that showcases his range and vocals.
In 2020, his exquisite three-track EP fused melody and rhythm for one of that year’s stronger outings. This time around, Mitrani utilizes his voice to reflect on a relationship gone wrong. And in a statement that could be political or emotional, he sounds more disappointed than betrayed. The result is two singles that impart Mitrani’s cathartic healing onto the listener.
The brooding intro to ‘Lies‘ features a gentle warm synth floating in time. Shavings of the same layered synth interject the serenity alongside percussion, which build strongly towards an almost grieving voice. Mitrani imbues his vocals with one part frustration and one part sadness, all underscored by lush arpeggiators and gentle melodies slowly filtering towards a rising crescendo. The final act is where the sum of all the parts join to make the whole: Mitrani repeats ‘I don’t believe in your lies’ while a plethora of different melodies and layers serve to soothe whatever pain he is experiencing.
The vocal makes way for the other elements in the Instrumental Version, turning this into a hypnotic groover focusing more on rhythm without sacrificing a drop of emotion. Once the dreamy analogue melody, vibrato strings, and beautiful keys appear, you will be hard-pressed to find a more suitable soundtrack for sunsets and sunrises alike.
On ‘Never‘, the energy feels tempered. It is an exquisite slice of electronica that feels like the lovechild of Thom Yorke and early Telefon Tel Aviv. The melodies feel delicate, and the soft percussion makes for a refreshing listen. Mitrani’s almost vulnerable vocal delivery is weaved in-between it all, a haunting effort that nestles itself into your memory.
