After disappearing off our radar, Neneh Cherry returns with her first solo album in 16 years. A Four Tet production, the album, released through Smalltown Supersound, is a collaboration with RocketNumberNine and features a guest appearance from Robyn.
Blank Project is Neneh’s latest project, which was recorded and mixed over a five day period. Not moving too far from Rip Rig + Panic days, the album still offers the energetic, poetic sounds from her previous albums, while Four Tet offers a modern, pounding instrumental to mesh perfectly with Neneh’s soulful and raw vocals.
Originally written as a way of dealing with personal tragedy, the album goes from the soft, melodic sound that we’ve come accustomed to, to the more electronic, beat-heavy tracks such as “Dossier.”
Far from introverted, the album combines avant-electronica with Neneh’s emotive, wildly poetic vocals and the thunderous sounds of loose drums and a few synthesizers.
This album has received great reception, coming two years after her involvement with the collective The Thing, releasing the collaborative record The Cherry Thing, which featured new versions of songs by The Stooges, MF Doom and Ornette Coleman.
