There is no doubt that Tim Engelhardt is considered one of the scene’s most talented up-and-coming electronic music stars. If you need proof just have a look at his discography: He released his first track at the age of 14, and since then he has gone on to release over 20 singles and EPs before the age of 20 (he is currently 19 years of age).
It was the music of fellow Cologne resident Robert Babicz which inspired Tim’s journey into electronic music, and in a serendipitous twist of fate the revered engineer also took Tim under his wing, further inspiring Engelhardt to continue producing. All of his productions have a big emphasis on melody, and it’s this unique melodic sense he possess which has seen labels like Innervisions, Poker Flat, Traum Schallplatten and Babiczstyle all sign Tim Engelhardt tracks.
This Balance Selections mix drops just in time for his upcoming Australian tour which includes a highly anticipated slot at Strawberry Fields festival alongside acts like Sebastian Mullaert, Andrew Weatherall, Daniel Avery, Monkey Safari, Frankey & Sandrino…. you get the idea, it’s a big lineup. And you won’t be disappointed with this effort, it’s filled with glorious Tim Engelhardt originals alongside cuts from artists like Trikk and Toto Chiavetta. The future of dance music sure is looking good…

My last 3 releases:
What music did you listen too as a child?
My memories with music start at a very early age, where I listened to the records of my dad. None of my parents are musicians, but my father has a good record collection of all kinds of jazz, rock, experimental music, so I was confronted with alternative music from early on.
When was the first time that you realized that you liked electronic music?
A few years ago, my older brother gave me a disc full of mixes and tracks that I’ve started to listen to. Even though I couldn’t say I understood it completely, I loved the focus and the structure of the music and tried to re-produce some tracks.
When was the first time you saw a DJ in a club?
For me it was pretty much the other way around, I started playing before I even went to a club in my life. I got to know the whole thing from another angle.
Which producers/artists/acts inspire you?
There’s a few Four Tet, James Blake is the music I’m hooked on right now. From a club perspective, I like Tim Green, Patrice Baumel, Frankey & Sandrino, Fideles, also what Rampa has been doing for the last few years is pretty good.
What was the last album that you downloaded/bought?
The last album I bought was the new Four Tet album. I read about it in a magazine and was very curious to hear what he’s been doing for this one. This album is really worth a listen.
What is your current production and DJ set up like?
My production setup consists of a UAD Apollo, old Klein & Hummel studio monitors, a few hardware tools like a Minimoog Voyager, Nord Rack 2, Elektron Analog Rhythm, Oberheim Matrix 1000… I don’t DJ, but my live setup is Ableton, controllers, Analog Rhythm and a Moog Minitaur.
What releases do you have on the horizon?
! just released my last own record for 2017, but for the remainder of the year there will be a remix for Super Flu and maybe one more. Next year, I will release originals again.
Where can we hear you perform?
My next gig is at ADE for Jeremy Olander’s Vivrant and then I’m heading to Australia pretty soon, visiting Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Strawberry Fields.
Tell us more about the podcast you made for Balance?
As I don’t do DJ sets, I created this mix in my studio in Ableton. It took me about 3-4 hours to get this done, my favourite tracks are the recently released ‘Reality’ from myself and also Toto Chiavetta’s ‘Nothing Really Matters’, quite a special one.
My Recommendations
