Based in the South of France, Joris Delacroix is a producer, DJ and live performer with a musical style that combines House, and Techno influences with melodies.
A pianist since his childhood days, Joris refined his musical culture at Montpellier’s legendary after-hours club Barlive, and his success as an artist developed quickly on first album Room with View, which elegantly combined electronic music and melodic sounds.
On his most recent album, ‘Night Visions’, Joris pushed the sound even further, resulting in an unprecedented universe, between electronic trance, techno and melodic poetry, and, on this mix for Balance Selections, Joris showcases those sounds perfectly featuring artists such as KiNK, Claude VonStroke, Township Rebellion, Einmusik, Monolink, and more…

What music did you listen to as a child?
I was born in 1987 and raised in a family of wine makers from a small village in south of France, I am not from a family of musicians. So the cultural aspect of music was not a real thing for me when I was a child. I remember me playing some of my parent’s old vinyls for the 80’s, but I wasn’t really listening, it was more like a child game because it was already fun for me to make sound in any way I could do it. However, my mother has a sensibility to music and signed me to piano lessons very soon when I was 4, so I guess the only music I really listened at this period was the one I was learning to play, but my real interest to listening to music came later, when I was a teenager.
When was the first time that you realised that you liked electronic music?
When I was 10 or 11 years old, I found some old cassette tapes, which was made by my older cousin. He recorded Daft Punk tracks when it was broadcasted on the radio, and I immediately loved it. I remember the first party of my life was at a summer camp’s end at the same period and heard
‘Da Funk’ during the evening, and I think this is my first strong memory of actually living something intense with electronic music. After that, when I started asking my mom to buy me CD’s it was always electronic music compilations, and the only radio I listened was the one which broadcasted electronic music only.
When was the first time you saw a DJ in a club?
It was when I was 18, the legal age you can go to clubs in France. I just got my driver license and went into a club for the first time of my life, in the city near my village. It was a humble party in a small club, but for me at this moment I had the best time of my life. I remember seing the DJ playing vinyl. At a moment he played Rune ‘Calabria’ which was pretty new at this period. This was the moment I said to myself that I want to do the same thing and be a DJ.
Which producers/artists/acts inspire you?
There are a lot. If I stuck with electronic music I can say that I’ve been very inspired by all the French Touch artists in the years 2000 like Daft Punk, Laurent Garnier, David Guetta… etc. Later, I discovered another aspect of this music, more underground with track made by mostly German producers like Stephan Bodzin, Paul Kalkbrenner, Booka Shade… I can also mention Claude VonStroke, Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy, and all the music from the label Border Community released between 2005 and 2010.
What was the last album that you downloaded/bought?
‘Room With A View’ by Rone, who is one of my favourite producers ever.
What is your current production and DJ set up like?
The production set up moves all the time. I have a lot of hardware synths but I no longer use all these at the same time. For a period, I choose one or two synths, and focus on those to get the best I can from it. When I feel like I’ve done enough with those synths, I change for others.
For the DJ setup I use the classic Pioneer gears (DJM + 3 CDJ) but most part of time I play my hybrid DJ-live set, so I have my live gear, which is APC40 controller and Prophet 6 synth, with a little keyboard.
What releases do you have on the horizon?
I have a couple of remixes ready, but I don’t know yet when it will be released. I also have several original productions coming up, but I don’t know yet how I’ll release it. I’m maybe thinking about doing a new album, but for that I need more tracks, that’s what I’m actually working on.
Where can we hear you perform?
Like everyone, with the cover crisis it’s impossible to make gigs, so I don’t know, I hope we’ll can do new shows from September but it’s not sure at all. I regularly do livestream on my pages when I think it’s cool to do so.
