Marc Romboy has been at the forefront of electronic music for over a decade.
He’s released on some of the industry’s most refined labels including Gruuv, Ovum and 20/20 Vision to name a few. After studying countless composers of the last centuries, the German composer, DJ and producer of electronic music regularly pushes boundaries with sound having performed at the Planetarium of Bochum, near Düsseldorf with a show inspired by space. Marc’s Systematic Recordings imprint celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2019 and has featured artists such as Stephan Bodzin, Robert Babicz, Jimpster, Sébastien Léger among others.

What music did you listen to as a child?
I was eight when I went with my mum to the local record store in the city centre. The guy behind the counter asked me what I was looking for and I answered that I could sing the song which was ‘We are the robots, dam dam dam dam’. One minute later I was the owner of my first 7“ single from Kraftwerk.
When was the first time that you realised that you liked electronic music?
This process happened during the early 80’s when I started to buy mainly records in the direction of Breakdance, Old School Hip-Hop, Italo Disco, Electric Body Music, and Chicago house. All these genres had one thing in common, the punchy machine beats were made with drum computers like the ones from Linn, Oberheim and Roland.
When was the first time you saw a DJ in a club?
This was around 1984 when I was allowed to go to a Sunday afternoon kids disco event where they used to play everything from The Cure to Frankie Goes To Hollywood. But I don’t remember who the DJ was and how he was.
Which producers/artists/acts inspire you?
I know this is not a spectacular answer but back in the days this was without any doubt Kraftwerk. Generally I would say that every moment on life inspires you. Currently I love to listen to the birds in the forest, amazing sequences you hear from them sometimes.
What was the last album that you downloaded/bought?
I just bought Supertramp’s ‘Crime of the Century’. I bought it on CD back in the days as I was fascinated by the sound and arrangement of the opening track ‘School’. I always wanted to have this long-player on vinyl.
What is your current production and DJ set up like?
I have just finished to set up my brand new studio which you can occasionally see on my Instagram. After all the years I finally have a cocoon where I can instantly use all my analogue machines as they are all connected with my computer, MIDI and audio wise. This must be paradise! DJ wise I’m still working on compiling my hard disc where I instantly can grab all tracks of the last decades I used to love and play. ut it´s a lot of work to get this done.
What releases do you have on the horizon?
I have two albums coming up, one listening album where we combined the vocals of the singer Marlene Schuen from South Tyrol with classical instruments like piano and violin plus electronic synthesizer sounds. I did the project together with my friend Dimitri Andreas and we are just about to do the last tweaks. Besides this I’m working on an album with my French buddy Oniris. Out vision is to produce a musical techno album but we have just begun let’s see.
Where can we hear you perform?
Check my mix for Balance and my latest Bunker Session for John Digweed where I performed live from my studio.
Tell us more about the podcast you made for Balance?
My Balance mix is a typical Romboy I would say. I have compiled my own music with some tunes I currently love and prepared a journey into one’s body, mind and soul. I always try to find stuff which moves. But hey, why talking about music, push the start button and listen to my mix!
