Ian Carpenter is definitely one of Italy’s most exciting new artists, and after being chosen as the winner of Billboard Italia’s Next contest, he has been a regular at some of the country’s biggest electronic music festivals such as Nameless, Movement Turin and Kappa Futur, where he has played alongside some of scene’s biggest names.
On the production front, his music features in the playlists of numerous renowned DJs, and with a release on John Digweed’s Bedrock alongside Philipp Straub, a forthcoming EP on Balance Music, and other new releases in the pipeline on his label Trip Records, we look forward to what the future holds for this talented artist.

What music did you listen to as a child?
In my house there has always been an atmosphere full of musical inputs. My father is a musician, he plays the electric guitar and my brother is a pop singer, so music culture is in our blood. Initially as a child I listened to music playing on my home stereo with artists such as Van Halen, AC DC etc. In my teenage years as I got closer to clubbing, I understood what kind of music I was destined for.
When was the first time that you realised that you liked electronic music?
There was not a first time in particular, in the period of adolescence I approached the world of clubbing with my friends by going to the first parties and I realised that that sound involved me more and more.
When was the first time you saw a DJ in a club?
The first time I heard the king Carl Cox play I was at the Il Muretto club in Jesolo Lido in the province of Venice. He had and still has an unmistakable style, and I remember it was a fantastic experience to say the least.
Which producers/artists/acts inspire you?
During my artistic career I was inspired by various artists such as Adam Beyer and Stephan Bodzin, as I was looking for a sound that more belonged to me, and made sure that it represented me fully. Among the songs that struck me most are Stephan Bodzin’s ‘Singularity‘ and the more recent one by Adam Beyer ‘Your Mind‘.
What was the last track/album that you downloaded/bought?
When I make my music selection for my DJ sets, I go through the whole Beatport catalogue, to select the best possible music of the week, no one recommends me any songs, but it rather intrigues me to discover new artists. The last track I bought is James Organ & Pablo Rita ‘Secrets‘ (Dennis Cruz remix).
What is your current production and DJ set up like?
My studio cannot miss the Pioneer 2000 NXS2 console with the DJM 900 NXS2 mixer essential for excellent music reproduction, even if I plan to upgrade with the new 3000. I always attach my native instrument Jam machine in mode. live to insert some effects and make my sets unique. I use the Synthesizer Serum a lot, but more in production than live. I use the tracks purchased in Wav, for the best audio quality and I insert them in my inevitable USB that I always carry with me for any eventuality.
What releases do you have on the horizon?
My next release will be with Balance Music on October 22nd, the EP is titled ‘Aethernum‘ in collaboration with DJ and producer Philip Straub. The are also other productions in the pipeline.
Tell us more about the podcast you made for Balance?
I made this episode with the CDJ 2000 NXS and the Pioneer 900 DJM NXS mixer with live mixing. The track I like best in the DJ set is Tomy Wahl & Alain Fanegas ‘No Fate’, with really swaying rhythms. Usually I don’t count the timing for the realisation of a quality musical production, it depends a lot on artistic inspiration.
The top track in my DJ wallet currently is:
Stephan Bodzin – Boavista (Innellea remix)
If I could recommend only one of my tracks for you to listen to it would be:
Ian Carpenter – Eclipse
If I could recommend only one track for you to listen to it would be:
Beanfiled – Tides feat. Bajka (Ripperton remix)
The last movie I watched that I really liked:
The War or Tomorrow
My favourite TV show:
The Paper House on Netflix
