Last year Balance Music looked towards it’s home city of Melbourne for their latest CD compilation: Balance presents Uone. Across 2CDs Uone showcased his unique ear for melody and dancefloor dynamics with over 20 tracks, be it collaborations or original solo productions, all containing Uone’s deft touch in some form or another.
The latest single released from that sprawling mix is an original production from Uone, the old-school and dub-flavoured ‘Karnival Dreams’. Also included in the package is a remix from All Day I Dream producer and fellow Australian Retza, and Alphahouse label owner Butane. On the original Uone shows why he is considered one of the ‘hotly-tipped leaders of the new school’ with a considerably old-school tech house workout.
Drawing on influences from early 00’s UK labels like Oblong, ‘Karnival Dreams’ dabbles with dub FX, stretched vocals and percussion which rides upon a warm thick, kick, and loose running bassline. Imagine yourself blissfully off-track in Berlin’s Kater Blau after a two-day bender, and you might be halfway there. Make no mistake; this is music to get lost in.
In his Interdimensional remix, the USA’s master of minimal groove, Butane, steps up with a considerably tougher version. Staying true to the original’s dubby nature, FX and stabs are lightly sprinkled on top of the drums and the bassline of the original. In true Butane fashion the beat is beefed up, and the crunchy hats and an explosive snare replace the smooth vibe of the original for a sterner dancefloor-vibe. The ‘Interdimensional’ sample are promoted to the front for a more prominent feature which adds an almost mystical air to the mix. This one is for those serious dance floor moments when you need to take things up a notch without having to sacrifice vibe.
Melbourne’s uber-producer Retza once again proves why he is so legit. He stays true to the track name with a version that takes the dream-states of the original to another level. Tranquil FX and synths are gently rolled out across the dubby kick and bubbling bassline, and the skippy percussion and hi-hats pop in and out the rhythm for a delicious time. If the track just kept on rolling like that you would be happy, but halfway through Retza elevates the track even more with the introduction of an airy synth, and angelic choir touches, that is as welcoming as a nurturing embrace. If you need to warm up a chilly dance floor, look no further than ‘Retza’s Interdimensional remix’.
