What music did you listen to as a child?
I have very distant memories of being cradled by my mother as a baby as she played Medwyn Goodall ‘Medicine Woman’. For some reason I will always remember the cover art too and whenever I hear it, it brings back a wave of nostalgia. So I would say that is one of my earliest memories of music.
I grew up as a bit of a musical child. I took an early interest in guitar and learnt clarinet & saxophone throughout high school. I was part of a jazz improv band in Melbourne for a year, and think some of that quirkyness remains in my music today.
When was the first time that you realised that you liked electronic music?
I have recounted this story many times for people over the years. But my metal head brothers used to drive me to school, one of them had a twin sub in the boot of his very Australian VL Commodore a.k.a rattling tin can of metal panels barely holding together with the force of his subwoofer. He attended a Rainbow Serpent and his style immediately changed to artists like Terrafractyl, Tetrameth, Sensient, Merkaba, and lots of Australian Doof Music including the Open Records ‘Expansion Pack‘. Soon after I was being driven to school and dropped off whilst blaring loud electronic to the rest of the school haha.
Even earlier then that I can also recall always watching videohits on a saturday morning on the TV with my family as we did things around the house. I lost this track for about 10 years but finally found it again one day out of the blue. I can honestly say I spent 10 years looking for it. That track is ‘Out of the City’ by 2 Heads, I will always remember loving this song growing up!
When was the first time you saw a DJ in a club?
I would say it was as a fresh young 18 year old going to one of Melbourne’s best institutions Killing Time to see my older brothers friends the Rework crew host a night there. This also happens to be where I played my first ever public gig down the line and remains a close place in my heart and the heart of many Melburnians.
Which producers/artists/acts inspire you?
Where do I start! haha I have so many countless acts that have inspired me over the years. from Extrawelt, Mathew Jonson, James Zabiela, Guy J, Dousk, Patrice Baumel, Solee, SQL & Child, Nick Warren, Moderat, Modeselektor & Apparat as well. Honestly the list could keep going on and on and on but a common theme amongst these acts are that almost all of them I have seen perform at what I consider the birthplace of my passion for electronic music which is the ‘Market Stage‘ at Rainbow Serpent Festival.
What was the last album that you downloaded/bought?
Last album I would have bought would be Moderat II on Vinyl. I was recently in Bricklane in London with my partner and saw a Vinyl store. I promised I would not get carried away and just wanted to look. But after about 5 minutes in the electronic section I came across the Vinyl of this wonderful album for only £15 and simply couldn’t resist. It has been a long standing favourite of mine so was glad to find a brand new copy for myself.
Also I just received my vinyl from All Day I Dream which features one of my tracks ‘Eudaemonia’ which also happens to be on the very same wax as the boss man himself Lee Burridge, which I consider a huge honour in itself. fortunately i just picked up an oldchool vinyl player from an op shop for $30 bucks and it came with a $200 diamond tipped Ortofon Needle. So now i have something to play them on properly aswell!
What is your current production set up like?
My production setup consists of either in the box creations (VST plugins, Ableton, Arturia, Native instruments). This can all be taken into a live set where I can improvise over what I have made with live drum machines and synthesisers. I like a mixture of hardware and software and taking inspiration from hardware and moving small parts into the DAW for adaptation to the songs. I have used Monark by Native Instruments since I started making electronic music and I still use it a lot today. And, I would always recommend the Soundtoys bundle for anyone wanting to be creative in their studio.
What releases do you have on the horizon?
I have recently released an EP with Andy Woldman, Wilma, and Weekend Heroes on Nick Warren‘s ‘The Soundgarden’ and have also had Michael Hooker‘s remix of my track ‘5 Things I Like About You’ released on Global Underground’s recent Select: 8.
Both of these massive milestones of my career and I am very grateful to be able to share my music on these platforms! For the Future you can expect a couple of great remixers getting onboard some of my tracks due at the end of 2023 / start of 2024!
Where can we hear you perform?
You can find me playing around Melbourne or Australia and I am always available to play overseas aswell, I have just flown to New Caledonia to play two headline gigs and can recommend for anyone to go there and experience that magical tropical island!
Otherwise I’m always uploading recordings to my Soundcloud for listening!
Tell us more about the podcast you made for Balance?
My idea for this mix was a tricky one to pull off in theory. I approached lots of artists I admire and asked for tracks that were upcoming or basically unobtainable as I wanted to create a set that you can’t really just get the tracks from. There are parts to this set that involve songs from artists that you may only hear for now in this set (or if you go see them live). Too many sets nowadays are just listened too and shazamed for their gold. By making a set of mine and my peers current, upcoming music and unreleased or even unsigned tracks, then it would force the listener to have to tune into this Balance mix and listen to it properly for the set it has been constructed to be.
My Recommendations
The top track in my DJ wallet currently is:
Maetrik – Acid Uprock (Original Mix)
If I could recommend only one of my tracks for you to listen to it would be:
Liam Sieker & Andy Woldman – Eudaemonia feat. Wilma
If I could recommend only one track for you to listen to it would be:
This is going to be maybe a little cheesy but honestly it’s a divine piece of music.
Enya – May It Be
My favourite TV show:
Avatar: The Last Airbender series. If you know you know.
