It was an infatuation with electronic music from a young age that sparked the beginning of Nick Berry’s DJ career in the Sydney scene back in 2014.
Since then, Berry has made a name for himself through his acute deviation from what is expected, playing uniquely melodic music punctuated by an eclectic mix of deep house and techno – influenced by the 90’s rave and progressive trance era. Fast forward to present day and Nick Berry has shared lineups with DJ Koze, Oliver Koletzki, Andhim, and Gerd Janson to name a few.
During the stagnant year of 2020, he maintained his divergence from the conventional when he founded The Anomaly Radio Show alongside Harry Hooper and Milly Lees. The brand is a cultivation of deep electronic music paired with finely curated graphic design to help listeners navigate through the beautiful obscurities of electronic melodies. Anomaly has released a multitude of radio shows from a selection of talented international artists; Budakid, Invōker, Matthias Meyer, David Mayer, Stereo MC’s, Super Flu, among others. The mixes showcase the respective style of each DJ, while contributing to the surreality that is Anomaly. The music is complemented by the dynamic visuals of Leipzig talent – Panthera Krause.

What music did you listen to as a child?
Some of my earliest memories of music involved listening to Van Morrison, Roy Orbison, and The Beatles with my parents on road trips across Australia. I also used to sing as a child, and Elvis Presley was my go-to at the time. I find that quite funny now, whilst I appreciate his impact on the music scene, these days I am much more of a Beatles fan.
When was the first time that you realised that you liked electronic music?
The first time I fell in love with electronic music was when a close friend of mine showed me Above & Beyonds Group Therapy album on his iPod back in 2011. At that time, whilst I really connected with it, electronic music wasn’t the main driver for me creatively. It was only later when I got into the festival scene, that I fell in love with trance music. It was from that moment that I was completely hooked. As my tastes evolved over time, I became passionate about deep house and techno, but I will always have a soft spot for Trance. Since I started DJ’ng back in 2014, I’ve made a name for myself in Sydney and beyond through my love for melodic music.
When was the first time you saw a DJ in a club?
The first DJ I saw in a club would have likely been Dennis Ferrer at Civic Underground, back in 2014.
Which producers/artists/acts inspire you?
For me, it’s hard to pick one single DJ. I have a few gun to head favourites, namely – Dixon, Âme, Solomun, &ME, Adam Port, and Rampa. I am a die-hard fan of these guys, and at some point, all have influenced my DJIng in a profound way. I feel that Solomun from 2014 – 2019 was an unstoppable musical force. His DJ sets were so prolific, unique and structured. I have seen him countless times all over the world and pretty much every set left me gobsmacked.
Dixon & Âme are currently at the top of their game, and I absolutely love the sound that they have nurtured through their record labels Innervisions and Exit Strategy. I love that they are never afraid to throw a few curveballs throughout their sets that change the energy of the dance floor, and they are really unique in that way.
Finally, I must profess my love for the Keinemusik crew. When it comes to production, those guys really are the best in the business. I think their talent both as DJs and producers is severely underrated, but at the same time that is one of the best things about them, as they are the dance music industry’s best-kept secret.
What was the last album that you downloaded/bought?
I had the pleasure of purchasing a special edition of DJ Koze’s 2013 album Amygdala on vinyl two years ago. As far as deep house albums go, this record is the very best of them.
What is your current production and DJ set up like?
I am currently not producing, but I take my DJ set-up very seriously. I have 2 x Pioneer XDJ1000 MK2’s, a DJM 2000 mixer and two JBL 3 series monitor speakers. I really love the DJM 2000 mixer, because it gives you a hell of a lot of freedom with effects and such.
We are told you run your own brand ‘Anomaly’, please tell us more about that?
Anomaly is a passion project that was born in early 2020. From the beginning, we wanted Anomaly to provide an audiovisual experience to our audience. What I mean by this is we wanted to provide people with a unique and unheard-of sound; accompanied by contemporary and eclectic graphic design.
For us, the art had to represent the quirkiness of Anomaly. It had to be completely different to anything that people were used to here in Sydney and Australia in general. We liaised with two artists from Berlin and Barcelona, before we linked up with our current artist; Panthera Krause, who is based in Leipzig, Germany. Not only is Panthera a prominent DJ, but he is also one of my favourite graphic designers. His designs are incredibly unique, and I still pinch myself whenever he sends over new art. In 2023, we have a lot of highly talented DJs who are soon to be featured on the show. If you want to listen to our previous shows or keep an eye out for the next, you can find us here.
For those of you that connect with our design and brand as much as us, you can find some limited edition T-shirts at our Bandcamp store.
Where can we hear you perform?
Coming up you can find me playing at the following gigs:
– Glass Island w/ Seth Troxler – 19th March, Sydney
– Break Festival – 25th March, ACT
Tell us more about the podcast you made for Balance?
In the past few months I have played a few really enjoyable gigs – the most notable being at Club 77 in Sydney. I wanted to create a club ready Balance set that included a lot of tracks that I played at those gigs. The mix is a real journey that encompasses all of my favourite styles, including deep house, techno, trance, Indie dance and disco. I hope your listeners enjoy it!
My Recommendations
The top track in my DJ wallet currently is:
My favorite track as of late is Krystal Klear – Essentia. I had the pleasure of watching Gerd Janson B2B Solomun in Ibiza last year, which happened to be one of the best B2B’s I’ve witnessed, with them playing a unique mix of melodic techno, trance and indie dance all night long. This track was my favorite of the night, so once it came out has been a staple in all of my sets:
If I could recommend only one track for you to listen to it would be:
If I had to choose a song, it would likely be Everybody Loves The Sunshine by Roy Ayers. It’s iconic for so many reasons!
The last movie I watched that I really liked:
Last weekend I watched American Beauty, it’s quite dark and twisted, but very engaging throughout.
My favourite TV show:
It’s a little hard to choose ONE favourite, but my top shows of all time consist of The Sopranos, Westworld (Season 1 & 2), The Last Of Us, Game Of Thrones, Breaking Bad, and Yellowstone.
